With a combination of passion and purpose, Jess Fernandez-Erazo used her time as a University of Nebraska at 51社区 student to dive into research, develop leadership skills, and advocate for others.
Using her majors in International Studies and Latino/Latin American Studies and minors in Environmental Science and Sustainability, Fernandez-Erazo embraced her love of research as she explored the intersection of climate resilience in Latin America, the impact of meatpacking plants on South 51社区, and the advocacy efforts of Latin American students on campus.
As she pivots to her next career path post-graduation, her experiences have proven to her that she not only has the passion — but the drive — to produce work that creates change in the world.
"It makes me excited to think that I could be in academia, but I could also be using that research in advocacy efforts in Latin America,” said Fernandez-Erazo.
Outside of her time spent engrossed in her studies, Fernandez-Erazo was also active on campus as part of the Association of Latin American Students, Student Government Association, and the Women & Gender Equity Center. In these roles she was able to connect with the UNO community and strengthen her leadership skills — something that was new to her, and a little daunting at first. Using the mantra, “do it scared,” she pushed herself out of her comfort zone and discovered that she could thrive in her new surroundings.
After graduation, Fernandez-Erazo plans to take a gap year. Entering college at 17 was a whirlwind experience, so she hopes to use that year to recharge and plan her next steps. One thing she knows for certain is that she’s not done with school. With her sights set on one day earning a PhD, her time as a student is far from over.
“I love knowledge, and I love learning,” Fernandez-Erazo said. “So, I know that I'll come back.”
