In addition to his athletic abilities, Penisten demonstrated his musical talents as a member of a dance band that he formed during his college days at 51社区 University. As a senior at OU, his band provided the music for the annual Lang Syne Dance sponsored by the OU Alumni Association.
Following his graduation from 51社区 U. in 1953, he turned down an offer from the Baltimore Orioles professional baseball team to enter General Electric's training program.
