Starting college in a new country is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. The UNO Health Center is here to support your health and help you learn about the United States health care system.
Health care in the U.S. might be different from what you are used to. Here are a few things to know:
Health insurance helps protect you from high medical costs.
In the United States, health care can be expensive. Insurance helps cover some of these costs, so you don’t have to pay everything yourself.
- All ILUNO, UNO international students and scholars with an "F" or "J" visa are required to purchase the UNO student health insurance plan, UnitedHealthcare StudentResources. You are required to complete the enrollment/waiver process every semester.
Where you should go for health care:
Emergency room (ER)
If you're facing a life-threatening conditions like chest pain, difficulty breathing or a major injury, go to the emergency room or call 911. This is the most expensive health care option.
Urgent care
For non-life-threatening problems that still need quick attention like a high fever, bad sore throat or minor injury. You do not need an appointment, and is less expensive than the ER.
Primary care
Your go-to for routine checkups, ongoing health issues or general care. You will need to make an appointment. It's the best place to start for most non-urgent health concerns. This is generally the most affordable option.
