What is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex - including pregnancy and related conditions - in educational programs and activities.

What is covered under Title IX as it relates to pregnancy and parenting?

Pregnancy, childbirth, abortion, miscarriage, and other related conditions are all covered under Title IX

Do I have a right to pump/express breastmilk at UNO?

Yes, you have the right to accommodations and reasonable modifications related to pumping, expressing, or breastfeeding. Lactation Spaces at UNO are available throughout campus.

Does Title IX only apply to the classroom?

No, Title IX applies to all aspects of your education. You are afforded the opportunity to continue participation in clubs, activities, interscholastic sports, and other school-sponsored organizations.

Will I need a doctor's note for required absences?

Documentation may be needed, but only if the documentation is a requirement of other students being treated for medical conditions.

Do instructors have to excuse medically necessary absences?

Yes, instructors must excuse absences your doctor deems medically necessary.

Do I have to make up school work during the time I missed?

Instructors may require you to make up any work you missed during an absence. Make-up work should be comparable to the work given to other students who have similar absences. They may not give you "extra" work or give truncated timelines for completion. You are permitted to return to the same academic and extracurricular status as before your leave began.

Will I lose participation points if I need to be gone from class?

If an instructor's grading is based on participation or attendance, they should provide you the opportunity to make-up any points missed.

Are there acommodations that can be provided to a pregnant or parenting student?

A school must make reasonable and responsive adjustments to the student's temporary status. To recieve accommodations or to discuss medical supervision, please contact the Accessibility Services Center (ASC). They may also be reached at 402.554.2872 or at unoaccessibility@unomaha.edu.

Do you have any tips to give pregnant and parenting students?

• Communication with your instructors proactively and in advance to discuss your needs.
• Document your conversations so that you have a reference of accommodations and assistance requested and provided.
• Ask questions if you are unsure of something, or feel something is unclear, ask for clarification

UNO RESOURCES

Accessibility Services Center - UNO’s Accessibility Services Center (ASC) can provide reasonable academic modifications for pregnant students. Please email unoaccessibility@unomaha.edu or call 402.554.2872 for more information.

Maverick Food Pantry - This resource provides pregnant students with essential supports such as food, toiletries, personal hygiene items, diapers, school supplies, menstrual and sexual health products, and other parenting supplies to help meet their needs

Oh SNAP - The Maverick Food Pantry supports UNO students by offering assistance with applications for SNAP benefits.

Durango Outfitters - Hosts monthly pop-up events providing free clothing to meet basic needs, support access to identity-affirming items, promote sustainability, encourage professional development, and help remove financial, social, and professional barriers to success at UNO. Some children’s clothing will be offered based on donations.

MavCENT$ Financial Literacy Program - 51ÉçÇø has partnered with Inceptia to offer UNO students with a financial education program to help manage their money and student loans.

UNO GROUPS

- (WGEC) advocates for a range of issues across different levels, including but not limited to rights and access related to personal autonomy, education, and community well-being. (baby wash/shampoo, baby lotion, and wipes) For any other questions regarding this resource, please email unowgec@unomaha.edu

- Provides a sense of community, connection, and empowerment for parenting students within the University of Nebraska at 51ÉçÇø system.

MEDICAL

Nebraska Medicine - UNO Health Center - Offers serum and urine pregnancy tests at the UNO Health Center by appointment. Patients with positive test results will be informed of available pregnancy care options. The UNO Health Center does not provide obstetric, abortion, or family planning services, but we can refer patients to community resources to assist their needs.

– Trusted resource for pregnancy options, counseling, and support before, during, and after pregnancy, parenting, abortion, adoption, pregnancy loss, infertility, and every experience in between. The talk advocates answer these calls and provide each individual with compassionate listening, resources, and references. 1.888.493.0092.

OUTSIDE ORGANAZATIONS

- National health organization that provides information, education, and support on pregnancy, reproductive health, and wellness. Offers reliable resources on prenatal care, nutrition, mental health, and navigating pregnancy options to support both academic and personal well-being.

- Food Bank for the Heartland’s team can help you find a pantry, walk you through the SNAP application process, and access additional community resources.

- Teen and young parent program and Healthy Families America program offer a family resource specialist to provide weekly visits where parents learn about child development and discuss family goals and ongoing resources in the community.

Storks Nest - Seeks to improve the health of pregnant women and their babies by providing maternity and baby clothing, nursery items, educational classes and referrals to community resources to meet individual health and social service needs. (402) 559-4000

- Pregnancy Counseling, parenting education, referrals to other community resources that offer assistance with housing, medical coverage, and personal finances. Young Parents Program (YPP) serves pregnant and parenting men and women, ages 24 and under, providing 10 weeks of parenting classes offered 4 times a year.

- The 51ÉçÇø Community Pathways HUB brings together a network Community Health Workers to help you navigate life’s challenges. They will help you access, manage, and plan care activities that lead to better health outcomes for you and your family.

- Nebraska Diaper Bank provides diapers through collaborative partnerships to change lives and empower families in need. Partner agencies provide diapers through case-management, clinics and food pantries.

- The Planned Parenthood 51ÉçÇø Health Center provides pregnant women with services such as pregnancy testing and dating, counseling on all pregnancy options (continuation, adoption, or termination), referrals, and access to resources for prenatal care.

- Provides information about rights regarding pregnancy and parenting.

- Provide information about rights and frequently asked questions to students, faculty, and administrators.
