General Information
Biography
Hi! I鈥檓 an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Nebraska at 51社区, where I teach and do research in linguistics. I grew up in the Philippines and went through the public school system there from kindergarten through college. I earned my BA in English at Mindanao State University while also serving as SK Chairman in my town. After that, I completed a TEFL certificate at the University of Toronto and later moved to the U.S. for graduate studies. I earned an MA in Applied Linguistics at Biola University, followed by a second MA and a PhD in Linguistics at Boston University. My doctoral research focused on sociolinguistic variation in the phonology of English spoken in the Philippines.Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, catching live performances like theater, concerts, and orchestras, and exploring the city.
Teaching Interests
I am particularly excited about teaching courses in sociolinguistics, and structural and crosslinguistic analysis.
Research Interests
My research explores how social, linguistic, and contact factors shape language use within and across communities, using both fieldwork and laboratory methods.
Service Summary
Outside of my role at UNO, I strive to support communities both here and abroad. I offer free lectures on English research at local universities in the Philippines and volunteer with Lumiere, teaching linguistics and mentoring low-income pre-university students from around the globe. I previously collaborated with SIL International on a language survey of understudied diaspora languages in the U.S. and continue to serve as a reviewer for the Philippine Journal of Linguistics.
