Outside the Classroom Learning

Involvement in student organizations can provide positive social interaction, community service opportunities, and valuable real-world experience.

UNO houses the Alpha Chapter in Nebraska of Nu Rho Psi. Students with a 3.2 overall GPA and a 3.5 in neuroscience-related classes may be eligible for membership in the Honor Society. The UNO Chapter meets regularly throughout the semester. You may obtain more information by emailing Dr. Sollars.

The Society for Neuroscience is the world’s largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system. The nonprofit organization, founded in 1969, now has nearly 40,000 members in more than 90 countries and 130 chapters worldwide.

Undergraduate students can obtain membership in SfN with a yearly membership fee of $30.

(FUN)

FUN is an international organization that is focused on neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level. FUN’s members and supporters include businesses and organizations; private liberal arts colleges, state and research university departments and programs; and individual faculty and students, all sharing a common interest in undergraduate neuroscience.

Getting Involved Matters!

1. It allows you to become connected to UNO. - Our campus is full of resources, but the responsibility is on the student to seek them out. Being involved helps you to do that.

2. It helps build community. - Since you're leaving your family and sometimes your friends behind, getting involved helps your discover new friends with similar interests.

3. It allows you to discover your passions and strengths - These will follow you all through life. It allows you to discover what you don't like, too.

4. It's a résumé builder: Freshman year is not too soon to begin thinking about positioning yourself for future employment.

5. Sometimes, busier students do better in all areas: This will vary a lot by the student, of course, but more free time does not always equal better grades. Being involved will require some organization and time management on your part—and that's a good thing.
