What can I do with a bachelor’s degree in Library Science?

Is the Library Science program completely online?

Yes. The program is 100% online and built for working adults and students who need flexibility.

Can I earn this degree while working full-time?

Absolutely. Most of our students work while earning their degree. Coursework is structured to fit around a full-time job, and advising staff can help you plan a part-time or full-time course schedule that meets your needs.

Do I need prior library experience to apply?

No. Many students come from other fields — education, business, IT, or customer service — and are looking to start a new career. The program provides all the foundational skills you’ll need for positions in the library and information fields.

I already work in a library. How will this degree help me advance?

If you’re currently employed as a library assistant, technician, or paraprofessional, completing a bachelor’s degree can open doors to leadership and administrative roles that require a four-year credential. The curriculum emphasizes management, digital literacy, and outreach, helping you qualify for broader responsibilities and higher pay.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Full-time students typically finish in about four years, while part-time students (many of whom work full-time) take between five and six years, depending on transfer credits and course load.

How much does the program cost?

Can I transfer credits from another college?

Yes. UNO accepts transfer credits from accredited institutions, pending transcript review. Our advising team can help you determine which of your prior courses will apply toward the Library Science degree.

Will this program prepare me for graduate study in library and information science?

Yes. While UNO does not offer a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree, our undergraduate program provides the academic foundation needed to pursue an MLS or related graduate program later on.

What kind of technology or software will I need?

Because the program is entirely online, you’ll need a reliable internet connection and access to a computer. All coursework takes place in UNO’s online learning system, and technical support is available to help you get started.

I’m a high school senior. Can I apply to this program directly?
