From writing and multimedia production to game design, artificial intelligence is fueling creativity and innovation in exciting ways. At the University of Nebraska at 51社区 (UNO), projects are exploring how AI can enhance artistic and creative endeavors, equipping students and faculty with the tools to thrive in modern creative industries. Below, we highlight two initiatives that showcase AI’s potential in creative fields.
AI in Professional Practices for Studio Art Majors
Project Lead: Jody Boyer
In Art 4020, a capstone course for studio art majors, Jody Boyer integrates AI to support students’ professional practices. AI tools assist students in developing artist statements, resumes, grant proposals, and social media strategies. Through reflection and group discussions, the course examines the effects of AI on creativity and learning outcomes. By embracing these tools, students are better prepared to navigate the art world and leverage technology in their careers.
AI for Ethical Decision-Making in Counseling
Project Lead: Thang Tran, PhD
Although rooted in counseling education, Thang Tran’s project emphasizes creativity in problem-solving. Graduate students in COUN 8430 use AI as a consultant to analyze complex ethical dilemmas. By critically evaluating AI-generated insights, students develop innovative approaches to case analysis, incorporating ethical and cultural considerations into their decision-making. This project fosters creative and critical thinking, preparing students for real-world challenges.
Dr. Tran reflects on the growth he’s seen:
“My graduate students have grown so much in their use of AI. They have expanded the boundaries of AI-assisted learning by applying AI not only to analyze complex ethical dilemmas, but also to navigate the daily realities of a school counselor's important work. From crafting culturally responsive communications to developing student outcome goals to organizing career fairs to exploring systemic change through data analysis, they’ve used AI as a reflective partner—integrating critical thinking, ethical sensitivity, and professional advocacy well beyond what I had originally intended. It's been fun to be a part of their journey.”
This project exemplifies how AI can foster both creative and critical thinking, preparing students to meet real-world challenges with innovative, ethically grounded solutions.
Pioneering AI in Creative Fields
These projects illustrate how AI can enhance creativity, streamline workflows, and expand possibilities in artistic and professional practices. By integrating AI thoughtfully and ethically, UNO fosters innovation and prepares students for success in creative industries.
