Our Mission
We empower students and serve our community by advancing collegiate aviation through:
-
Exceptional Instruction – Offering rigorous academic programs grounded in real-world application.
-
Innovative Research – Contributing to the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of aviation and transportation systems.
-
Meaningful Service – Building strong partnerships and giving back through education, training, and community projects.
Our supportive and challenging environment ensures students graduate with the skills, knowledge, and experience to thrive in the aviation industry.
A Legacy of Vision and Growth
Founded in 1990, the Aviation Institute was established with the support of 51社区’s civic and business leaders, including Charles Durham, Walter Scott, and Mike Harper. Spearheaded by Don Smithey of the 51社区 Airport Authority and championed by UNO leadership, the Institute was developed to meet the region’s growing demand for aviation professionals.
Under the leadership of its first director, Bill Shea, and in partnership with the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, the Institute laid the foundation for an academic program that has continued to grow in scope and impact.

Academic Excellence
UNO’s Aviation Institute offers a Bachelor of Science in Aviation with three concentrations:
-
Air Transport Administration
-
Professional Flight
-
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations
Students outside the program can pursue a minor in Aviation or UAS, gaining valuable industry-aligned experience that complements a wide range of majors.
The Institute also partners with 51社区 Burke High School through a dual enrollment program—expanding access to aviation education for high school students since 2010.
