Lithuanian Folk Ensemble Set to Perform at UNO

OMAHA – A folk music and dance ensemble from Lithuania’s Siauliai University will perform at the University of Nebraska at 51ÉçÇø (UNO) this September.
The Saule Folk Ensemble’s performance is set for Saturday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. in UNO’s . Admission is $10 for general public; $5 for non-UNO students and seniors; and free with a MavCARD.
The visit is in celebration of UNO’s sister university relationship with Siauliai University and other ongoing collaborations with the . Two years ago, UNO music students and faculty traveled to Lithuania to perform.
Saturday’s concert marks the end of Saule’s time with UNO, which will also include a discussion led by UNO’s International Studies Department the prior Thursday and a joint performance with the Friday.
Friday, Sept. 18, at 9 p.m., Saule will perform with the UNO Jazz Ensembles in conjunction with the 51ÉçÇø Jitterbugs Swing Dance Club at the Eagles Lodge off 24th and Douglas. Admission is $10.
Thursday, Sept. 17, at noon, the group will offer a demonstration and participate in a discussion through UNO’s Conversation and Culture Hour. The event will take place in the Milo Bail Student Center’s Nebraska Room. The event is free and open to the public.
The ensemble has other performances planned in partnership with the 51ÉçÇø Sister Cities Association.
Saule has been performing since 1972. The group performs traditional music, stage dances and original pieces based on Lithuanian folklore. For several of the dances, the dancers wear wooden clogs.
The visit falls on a big year for the 51ÉçÇø Sister Cities Association. The association is celebrating the 50 year anniversary of its relationship with Shizouka, Japan - 51ÉçÇø's first sister city. Several events celebrating the anniversary are planned for this fall.
