Dedicated and effective instructors are a university’s most important asset. At UNO, we have among us those whose performance merits special attention.
Philip Froese
Department of English
College of Arts and Sciences
UNO is proud to recognize Philip Froese, part-time instructor in the Department of English, as the 2025 Excellence in Part-time Teaching Award. This award honors outstanding teaching by part-time faculty who go above and beyond to support students and advance UNO’s mission through instruction, engagement, and innovation.
Froese, who has taught English composition courses at UNO since 2016, is a shining example of teaching excellence and student-centered learning. His commitment to teaching is evident in every aspect of his work, from developing engaging online instruction to fostering meaningful personal connections with students.
An alumnus of UNO’s MA in English program, Froese brings both knowledge and lived experience to his classroom. His courses are especially impactful for non-traditional learners, including military members, working professionals, and students returning to college. Through weekly video announcements, one-on-one Zoom meetings, and personal check-ins, Froese creates an online learning environment that is as engaging and connected as any in-person classroom.
His teaching evaluations consistently reflect his effectiveness. Across multiple years and course sections, Froese has earned exceptional ACE scores, with many students giving him perfect 5.0 ratings in areas such as overall course and instructor quality, rapport, and organization. His courses also maintain impressively low DFW rates, even outperforming many face-to-face sections.
Beyond the classroom, Froese extends his passion for literacy into the community. He has provided tutoring at the Open Door Mission for over two decades, helping to improve foundational reading, writing, math, and study skills.
Whether designing creative online assignments, supporting student persistence, or mentoring new instructors in the First Year Writing program, Froese represents the best of what part-time faculty can bring to the university community.
